KANPUR: On Friday, right-wing activists protested at Sadhbhavna Chauraha, located about 1,500 meters from the Green Park stadium, where India is competing against Bangladesh in a Test match. The demonstrators recited the Hanuman Chalisa and called for the match to be cancelled.
Activists from several groups, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, organized the protest. Upon learning about the demonstration, police quickly mobilized to the area. A significant police presence, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankita Sharma, was deployed to prevent the protesters from approaching the stadium.
Senior officials informed the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) to maintain close surveillance and be ready for any situation. Sharma noted that many members of the right-wing organizations participated in the protest, chanting the Hanuman Chalisa.
The protesters voiced their anger over alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh and demanded the cancellation of the Test match. They also submitted a memorandum to the police commissioner, criticizing the organization of the match in Kanpur, calling it "unfair and disgraceful."
The police were able to calm the protesters, advising them not to break the law, and successfully dispersed them after accepting their memorandum. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chander highlighted that just a week earlier, an FIR was filed against 20 members of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha for blocking traffic during a 'havan' in protest against the treatment of Hindus in Bangladesh.
