Thiruvananthapuram: As torrential rains lashed many parts of Kerala on Wednesday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red alert for the day in four districts of the state, denoting extremely severe rainfall. In the northern Kerala districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, a red alert was issued. IMD issued an Orange alert for seven districts, including the four mentioned above as well as Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram, in the morning. The Orange alert is still in effect in Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram. IMD has also issued an Orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod for Thursday. Several national weather predicting institutes have forecasted scattered heavy rainfall over the state today. Due to cyclonic circulation in and around Kerala, as well as a low-pressure trough from north Kerala to Vidarbha region, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has forecast widespread rain in the state for the next 5 days, with the possibility of isolated thunder, lightning, and strong winds. For the next two days, the Central Meteorological Department predicts isolated heavy and very heavy rainfall showers throughout the state, followed by heavy rainfall for the next two days. Heavy rains have been falling in Kerala for the past few days, disrupting regular life in some parts of the state. The state government held a conference of district collectors and gave directives to deal with any eventualities, despite the fact that the Southwest monsoon is not predicted to arrive until the end of this month.
