Train crash near Barcelona in Spain leaves driver dead, dozens injured

BARCELONA: One person was killed and at least 85 others were injured in a collision between a freight train and a passenger train at Barcelona's Sant Boi de Llobregat station, authorities confirmed.

At around 6 p.m., a freight train derailed and collided with a passenger train at the station in Sant Boi de Llobregat, some 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) south of Barcelona. The passenger train's driver perished as a result of the collision, according to the regional authorities.

According to the Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Emergencies (DGPCE), the disaster occurred at 6 p.m. on Monday when a freight train carrying potash derailed at the station's entry and collided with a passenger train departing at the time, according to the Xinhua news agency. The passenger train's driver was killed, according to the regional authorities.

Jordi Puignero, Vice President of the Generalitat and Minister of Digital Policies and Territory, informed reports that nine people were hurt in the collision. Meanwhile, the accident's reasons are being investigated.
