Tripura: Militant outfit surrenders to CM Biplab Deb

On Tuesday, members of Tripura's militant outfit National Liberation Front of Tripura-Sabir Debbarma (NLFT-SD) surrendered today (Tuesday) in the presence of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb in Ambasa.

According to media reports, a tripartite agreement (Memorandum of Settlement) was signed on Saturday (August 10) between the Centre, Tripura and the Militant Organization (NLFT-SD). It was decided that 88 members of the militant outfit would lay down their arms. The NLFT-SD representatives also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

For your information, the militant group carried out 317 violent incidents in 10 years between 2005 and 2015. 90 people, including 28 security forces, were killed. The militant organization was activated in 1989. The NLFT has spread violence through its Shivers across the international border. This was followed by a ban by the government in 1997 under the Unlawfully Activities Prevention Act. Peace talks with the NLFT were initiated in 2015. Since 2016, the militants of the organization have not carried out any violent action. According to a letter issued by the government, joint secretary of the Union Home Ministry (North East) Satyendra Garg, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Alok Kumar and NLFT-SD of the Government of Tripura have not taken any violent action. Sabir Kumar Debbarma and Kajal Debbarma signed. The government had assured the NLFT-SD leaders that its surrender members would be given benefits under the Union Home Ministry's 'Surrender Rehabilitation Scheme-2018'.
