Trump's fraud trial is scheduled by a New York judge

USA: A judge ruled Tuesday that Donald Trump and his three eldest children will stand trial late next year in a civil case brought by the New York attorney general alleging fraud.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Angrone set a hearing for October 2, 2023, in the case, which alleges that Donald Trump and members of his family inflated the value of properties to enrich themselves. did.

The former president's bid for a second term in office, which he announced last week, will likely be complicated by the lawsuit and several other criminal, civil and congressional investigations he currently faces.

The deadline would be near the start of the 2024 Republican presidential primary season, which Trump's lawyers will likely try to delay.

The Trump Organization was sued in September by lead New York prosecutor Letitia James, who claimed that Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump and the Trump family lied for years to tax authorities, lenders and insurers.

In order to obtain the loan, meet insurance requirements and reduce taxes, she claims she provided false information about Trump's net worth and property values.

James, a Democrat, has said Trump must pay at least $250 million in fines, the amount she claims she fraudulently profited from, and that her family's businesses in the state be banned.

Criminal charges cannot be brought by his office in this matter. Trump, 76, claims the lawsuit is politically motivated. He has made several attempts to dismiss it.

Tuesday's Supreme Court ruling dealt him another legal blow by allowing him to turn over his tax returns to a committee of the House of Representatives with a Democratic majority.

Trump refused to make the records public while in office, breaking with presidents since the 1970s, and went to court to oppose Congress's request.

When the judges decided, without explanation, that the House Ways and Means Committee should receive the returns, it appeared that the legal battle had reached its conclusion.

The committee is requesting tax returns from 2015 to 2020 for Trump and his business entities. Receipt of returns by the Committee does not imply that they will be made available to the public.

With just weeks left in the current Congressional term, the move would result in Republicans holding a slim majority in the House, which they will take over in January.

Despite Trump's overhaul of the Supreme Court, its justices have never ruled in his favor in the case, specifically approving the transfer of his tax returns and business records to the Manhattan District Attorney's office in 2020.

The Trump Organization has been accused by Manhattan prosecutors of concealing compensation paid to top executives between 2005 and 2021.

In addition, Trump is under legal scrutiny for his efforts to nullify the results of the election in November 2020 and for his supporters' attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
