Turkey: Hagia Sophia Mosque opens for Friday prayers for Muslim and other religion people

Baghdad: The prayer for the first time was performed on Friday after the historic Hagia Sophia in Istanbul in Tuqqi was converted into a mosque. Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğana had ordered the conversion of Hagia Sophia from the museum to the mosque. Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya has said that Muslims are very keen about the mosque, everyone wants to be present there.

The World Detention Center of 1500 old UNESCO was made a museum in 1934. Earlier this month, a Turkish court cleared the way for the Hagia Sophia Museum to be converted into a mosque. The court said in its decision that the Hagia Sophia would no longer be a museum and cancelled the 1934 cabinet decision. After this, Erdoğana announced that the Namaz will be performed in the world-renowned Hagia Sophia from 24 July. He also said that Hagia Sophia will be open to all Muslims, non-Muslims and tourists too.

But this decision was severely criticized by many religious leaders and politicians all over the world. In his televised address on Thursday, Istanbul Governor Yerlikaya urged people to come to Hagia Sophia for Friday prayers to bring face masks and carpets for them, as well as urging people to stay calm and follow physical distancing.
