Turkish shelling kills five people in northern Syria

Turkish shelling killed five people in Kurdish-controlled parts of Syria's northern Raqqa province, reported by war monitor.

On Saturday, the alleged perpetrators were slain. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, tensions between Turkey and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are still present in the Ayn Issa district of Raqqa's countryside. Turkish opposition to the presence of a Kurdish force in northern Syria is reflected in clashes and bombardment.

According to the UK-based monitoring organisation, Turkish-backed Syrian rebels attempted to sneak into Ayn Issa on Friday amid battles and shelling. Turkey started a huge campaign in northern Syria in 2018, driving the SDF and other Kurdish fighters out of key regions in Aleppo province as part of its effort to push any Kurdish presence away from its border.
