Uber Cup: Indian women’s badminton team assures bronze

The Indian women’s badminton team assured itself of at least a bronze medal after notching up a comfortable 3-1 win over Thailand in the quarterfinals of the Uber Cup on Thursday. This will be the second successive podium finish for the women’s team. They had created history in the last edition of the tournament in New Delhi when they clinched the country’s first ever medal, a bronze, in the Uber Cup.

When the top gun misfired, youngster Ruthvika Shivani came to the rescue with a stupendous display to assure her team of a bronze with a 3-1 victory against Thailand in the Uber Cup quarterfinals on Thursday.

Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa made it 2-1for with a 21-19, 21-12 win against Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai. Ruthvika then proved her mettle. No one expected her to get past a tough opponent like Nitchaon Jindapol, the world No.25 who has been giving top shuttlers a tough time.

Ruthvika came up with a stunning show and registered a 21-18, 21-16 victory. Leading 20-10, Ruthvika conceded eight points before winning the first game at 21-18.
