Mumbai: Maharashtra CM and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had said that the central government, not the state government, has the right to change the name of the cities. CM Thackeray made this statement in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on the issue of renaming Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar. The Shiv Sena, which supports the change of name, is facing opposition from its ally Congress on this issue. In fact, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state is targeting the Shiv Sena, saying that the Uddhav Thackeray-led party has abandoned its old demands to stay in power. Please tell that the civic elections are going to be held in Aurangabad this year, so this issue has become more important. In response to a question raised by BJP MLA Yogesh Sagar in the Assembly on Tuesday, CM Thackeray said that the renaming of cities is under the jurisdiction of the Central Government and not the official jurisdiction of the State Governments. CM Thackeray further said that a detailed proposal to rename Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar was received from the Divisional Commissioner on March 4, 2020. He said that in view of the legal aspect of the case, the Law and Justice Department has been asked to give suggestions. CM Uddhav Thackeray said that after getting all kinds of approval, the proposal of the Divisional Commissioner of Aurangabad will be sent to the Center.
