Ukraine Cracks Down on Corruption: President Zelensky Shuts Down Regional Military Recruitment Centers

Kyiv: In a bold move aimed at combatting corruption and ensuring a more robust and ethical military recruitment process, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday the closure of all regional military recruitment centers across the nation.

This decision comes as Ukraine grapples with an ongoing conflict against Russia's aggression and fervently seeks EU membership.

The decision follows a comprehensive review of the country's recruiting facilities, which revealed disturbing evidence of professional misconduct and underhanded practices.

Among the allegations were instances of transporting draft-eligible men across national borders in violation of wartime bans and cases of illegal enrichment. These revelations have prompted Zelensky to take decisive action in an effort to root out corruption from the ranks of the Ukrainian military.

In a statement addressing the issue, Zelensky emphasized the significance of having an incorruptible and dedicated system in place, particularly during times of conflict.

He stressed the importance of appointing individuals who comprehend the gravity of war and the necessity of upholding principles of integrity and patriotism. "Cynicism and bribery during war is treason," he remarked, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

As part of the plan to revamp the recruitment process, Zelensky announced that top general Valery Zaluzhny will be entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the decision.

New applicants seeking positions within the recruitment centers will undergo thorough screenings conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the nation's domestic security agency.

This step aims to ensure that only individuals with unwavering dedication to the nation's interests and a commitment to ethical practices are selected for these pivotal roles.

The move comes at a critical juncture as Ukraine confronts the 18-month mark of its struggle against Russia's full-scale invasion. The conflict has presented numerous challenges for the Ukrainian military, including recruitment difficulties and occasional scandals exposing corruption and aggressive recruitment tactics.

Zelensky's sweeping reforms signal a determination to strengthen the nation's armed forces from within and to foster a renewed sense of pride, discipline, and ethical conduct among its ranks.
