UN chief receives first dose of corona vaccine in New York

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres received his first dose of a corona vaccine in New York on Thursday. He received a vaccine shot at Adlai E Stevenson High School in The Bronx , near UN Headquarters in New York.

Taking to Twitter, the UN chief said that he was fortunate and grateful to receive the shot. He urged the international community to ensure that vaccines become available to everyone on an equitable basis. He took to Twitter and wrote,  "With this pandemic, none of us are safe until all of us are safe." The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday praised the India's role in the world as vaccine making hub. He applauded India for supply of corona vaccines to countries around the world. The UN chief said, "I would like to say how much we count on India. I mean, India has one of the most advanced pharmaceutical industries. India played a very important role in the production of generics for use that was a very important element of democratisation of access to medicines all over the world." 

India has supplied more than 6 million corona doses to nine countries in Phase-I under its initiative termed "Vaccine Maitri". Contractual supplies to various countries are also being undertaken in a phased manner.
