UN Secretary-General condemns Houthi attacks on Saudi civilian sites

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the recent Houthi-claimed assaults in Saudi Arabia on civilian targets, according to a UN spokeswoman.

"These acts harm possibilities for peace and regional stability, as well as our special envoy Hans Grundberg's ongoing mediation efforts," said Stephane Dujarric, Guterres' main spokesperson, according to reports..

"All parties are urged to show greatest restraint and avoid any further escalation," Dujarric said. "We strongly urge all stakeholders to interact with Grundberg constructively and without preconditions." The special envoy's goal is to move forward with talks in order to find a comprehensive negotiated settlement to end Yemen's crisis.

Attacks against Saudi Aramco oil facilities in Jeddah and other energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia were claimed by the Houthi rebel group on Sunday. It was the second such cross-border missile attack in less than 24 hours on Saudi Arabia.

The Houthis launched their strikes on Sunday just days after declaring that they were ready for peace negotiations after previous attempts to engage the militia in such talks failed.
