Under Operation Kaveri, India brings new batch of 231 people

MUMBAI: India on Wednesday, May 3, 2023,  brought back home a total of 231 people under Operation Kaveri mission to evacuate stranded Indians from strife-torn Sudan. The Indians reached Mumbai in a commercial flight.

Taking to Twitter, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi wrote: "Another Operation Kaveri flight brings citizens back home. Flight carrying 231 passengers landed in Mumbai" 

From the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, where India set up a transit camp for the evacuees, Indians were returned home. As part of "Operation Kaveri," India has been busing its nationals from combat zones in Khartoum and other difficult areas to Port Sudan, where they are then transported to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia by heavy-lift transport aircraft and ships from the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The Indians are being flown home from Jeddah either on a commercial flight or on an IAF aircraft. Tuesday saw the arrival of 231 Indians in Ahmedabad and the transport of 328 more people to New Delhi.

In accordance with the evacuation mission that was started more than a week ago, India took back 186 persons on Monday. While 365 people arrived in Delhi on Saturday, 229 Indians arrived in Bengaluru on Sunday.

In two batches on Friday, 754 people arrived in India as part of the evacuation mission. According to official statistics, there have now been 2,930 Indians returned to their country.

On the previous Wednesday, the first group of 360 evacuees flew back to New Delhi in a commercial aircraft. In a C17 Globemaster aircraft operated by the IAF, the second group of 246 Indian evacuees touched down in Mumbai on Thursday.
