United World Wrestling to host a World Championship

Top countries National Wrestling Federations was asked to confirm their interest in participating at the 2020 World Championships. A benchmark of of at least 8 of 10 of the top nations from the 2019 World Championships, and 70% of total athletes, participate in 2020 world championships has been set by the UWW. The COVID-19 travel restrictions hurdles the participation. 

“We want to see our athletes compete again on the mat. It’s important to our organisation and we are committed to providing them with an opportunity. There are real challenges to overcome, but we are working together to find a safe and acceptable format where our top athletes can compete in a world class event,” said United World Wrestling president Nenad Lalovic in an official statement after announcing the ‘individual world cup’ instead of the much awaited world championships. 

Upon confirmation from the countries the “Individual World Cup” dates in Belgrade will be finalizes in the coming days. The event will include a prize pool of 300,000 CHF across the 30 weight categories.The wrestlers from the world is looking for a match as the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, 8 months the players were struck. Four Olympic quotas have been secured by India so far by Bajrang Punia (65kg), Deepak Punia (86kg), Ravi Kumar (57kg) while one by Vinesh Phogat (53kg) in the women’s category.
