US Defense Secretary Highlights Expanded US-India Relations and Global Security Efforts

Washington DC, November 9: U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin highlighted the expanded U.S.-India relationship and strengthened global alliances under the Biden administration. Speaking to reporters after a command change at U.S. Southern Command in Florida, Austin said, “The Biden Administration in the last four years has expanded America’s relationship with India.”

Austin emphasized the progress in alliances like NATO, noting how the U.S. kept 50 countries unified in supporting Ukraine. "We have strengthened NATO and kept it focused on collective security," he said, adding that the Indo-Pacific region has seen remarkable strides in cooperation. The U.S. relationship with the Philippines and India, Austin mentioned, has grown considerably. He also acknowledged Japan’s increased defense investment over the past few years.

Reflecting on his time as head of the Pentagon, Austin praised the Department of Defense’s leadership for its role in these achievements. The Secretary also commented on former President Donald Trump’s historic return to office, marking him as only the second leader in U.S. history to serve non-consecutive terms.

Austin briefly discussed Trump’s impressive electoral victory, securing over 300 electoral votes, winning all seven battleground states, and garnering the popular vote. In his victory speech, Trump declared his commitment to a prosperous and strong future for America.

In his remarks on social media, Austin honored the dedication of U.S. Southern Command's members, noting the importance of partnerships and countering security challenges throughout the hemisphere. He also addressed progress in other regions, despite the U.S. focus on Ukraine and recent efforts to support Israel.

On the topic of humanitarian assistance in Gaza, Austin underscored its priority, mentioning his recent conversation with Israel’s outgoing defense minister, Yoav Gallant, about the importance of aid. “More work is needed,” he said, stressing the goal of providing relief to affected areas.

Reflecting on regional conflicts, Austin expressed relief that tensions in Europe and the Middle East remain contained. "I think we’ve managed the situation well, preventing escalation into wider regional wars," he said.

When asked about the future direction of U.S. military efforts, Austin chose not to speculate but expressed confidence in military leadership. “Our leaders are fully committed to maintaining the competitive edge and defending this country,” he said, emphasizing the military’s dedication to teamwork and duty.
