Chinese social media users have been abuzz about Walz’s time spent teaching in Guangdong Province in 1989, a period that coincided with the Tiananmen Square protests. His year-long stint teaching English and American history, along with a honeymoon in China, is currently a hot topic on Weibo, having garnered 12 million views.
Walz, now the governor of Minnesota, has often spoken fondly of his time in China, describing it as "one of the best experiences" of his life. The year 1989 is significant due to the Tiananmen Square massacre, which saw a violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. Although Chinese social media is heavily censored regarding this historical event, comments about Walz’s presence in China during that time reflect a mix of nostalgia and skepticism.
