US government agencies including the Treasury and Commerce hacked

The networks of federal agencies including the Treasury and Commerce have been hacked, just days after US officials warned that cyber actors linked to the Russian government were exploiting vulnerabilities to attack sensitive data.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity arm are investigating the matter. Dmitri Alperovitch said that this can turn into one of the most impactful espionage campaigns on record. Few days ago, a big cybersecurity company disclosed that foreign government hackers had broken into its network and stolen the company’s own hacking tools.

FireEye, a major cybersecurity player serves customers include federal, state and local governments and top global corporations. Many experts suspect Russia is responsible for the attack against FireEye. Last week, FireEye said its own defences were breached by sophisticated attackers who stole tools used to test customers' computer systems. Neither Mandia nor a FireEye said when the company detected the hack or who might be responsible behind it but many in expert suspects that Russia can be a possible culprit.
