MLC polls: BJP loses in Varanasi, Annapurna Singh, wife of mafia Brijesh Singh, hits out

Lucknow: The counting of votes for 27 Legislative Council  (MLC) seats of the local body of Uttar Pradesh is taking place today. As many as 95 candidates are trying their luck in 27 seats of the state, most of which are a direct contest between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BJP. The reputation of Bahubali leaders is at stake in some seats. People's eyes are also on Kunda MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh (Raja Bhaiya) and mafia Brijesh Singh.

Annapurna Singh, the wife of the mafia and MLC Brijesh Singh, has managed to win the Varanasi-Chandauli-Bhadohi seat as an independent. Annapurna Singh has defeated BJP candidate Sudama Patel. The MLC seat in the Varanasi-Chandauli-Bhadohi area was won by Annapurna Singh, wife of mafia Brijesh Singh and an independent candidate. BJP candidate Dr Sudama Patel got only 103 votes while SP candidate Abhay Yadav got 171 votes.

For the past two decades, the Varanasi MLC seat has been held by the family of Brijesh Singh. The last time in the 2016 MLC elections, independent Brijesh Singh himself was fielded, who was not fielded by the BJP while giving a walkover. The BJP bet on Sudama Patel for being in power this time, but Brijesh Singh, who is lodged in a Varanasi jail, defeated the BJP by fielding his wife as an independent.
