Uttarakhand Assembly Meeting Set for February 5-8, UCC Bill to Be Introduced

The Uttarakhand Assembly is scheduled to commence from February 5 to 8, as per an announcement from the Assembly Secretariat. During this session, the government led by Pushkar Singh Dhami will present the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill for consideration.

Sources within the government have indicated that the UCC bill will be tabled in the Assembly on February 6.

In addition to this, a bill proposing a 10% horizontal reservation in government jobs for state protesters and their dependents will also be presented.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had previously mentioned that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Committee has finished its work, with the report slated for submission on February 2.

CM Dhami, discussing the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand, stated, "In the 2022 assembly elections, we promised the people of the state to establish the Uniform Civil Code. The committee has completed its work, and on February 2, it will submit its report."

Furthermore, the Chief Minister stated that upon receiving the report on February 2, it will be presented to the Cabinet, followed by action in the state assembly to enact the Uniform Civil Code Act.

Uttarakhand had formed a panel on the Uniform Civil Code, headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, on May 27, 2022.

The promise of UCC was a significant aspect of the 2022 assembly polls in Uttarakhand.

Article 44 of the Indian Constitution calls for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to be pursued throughout India. The UCC aims to establish uniform laws governing marriage, inheritance, adoption, and other matters.

The issue of UCC, which has sparked debate over the past four years, gained renewed attention in June last year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated for its implementation during an address in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

PM Modi emphasized the importance of a single law for the nation, aligning with the foundational principles of the Constitution.

"In today's scenario, people are being divided in the name of UCC. How can a country function with two sets of laws? The Constitution advocates for equal rights... The Supreme Court has also urged for the implementation of UCC. These opposition parties are playing vote bank politics," PM Modi remarked in Bhopal.
