Chennai: Thol. Thirumavalavan, founder of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), urged the Tamil Nadu government on Sunday to enact a law prohibiting hate speech and propaganda during the next session of the Legislative Assembly. He said in a statement that the BJP-led government at the Centre had disregarded a draught law prepared by the Indian Law Commission in 2017 to curb hate speech and propaganda in the country. "In the upcoming Assembly session, the Tamil Nadu government should implement the recommendations," he said. Thirumavalavan refuted the State BJP's allegation that a Class XII student at a Christian missionary-run school in Thanjavur committed suicide due to pressure to convert to Christianity. "The Tamil Nadu government should not remain silent in the face of such hate propaganda. "Those who engage in it must face severe consequences," he said, adding that the girl said in a statement read in front of a magistrate that her teacher forced her to look into the school's accounts and compelled her to stay in the hostel even during the holidays. He accused the BJP of attempting to incite hatred against the school and the entire Tamil Nadu Christian community.
