G-23 members to gather at Ghulam Nabi's house, veteran leader hurt by Congress' humiliating defeat

New Delhi: In May 2014, when Narendra Modi took over power at the Centre, the Congress' footprints were reduced from nine to just two states of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Congress is once again facing this crisis of credibility and leadership. This crisis is not new – the party has won only five of the 45 elections it has held since 2014. But this time, Congress did not even try to revive itself. There was a sense of disappointment in the party even before the elections in five states. At the same time, the foreshadowing of internal turmoil in Congress after the election results was also foreseen by all.

According to the report, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has indicated that a meeting of the party's working committee will be convened soon to discuss the way forward. But during the interaction with most of the leaders, it was revealed that they had no information in this regard. Some young leaders referred to the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) landslide victory in Punjab, saying the "old and tired" leaders of the Congress now need to make way for the youth.

According to the report, several veteran leaders representing the Congress G-23 on the election results of 5 states said that "we had already told you this". Ghulam Nabi Azad, a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), said, "I am shocked, my heart is being made to sit on seeing our defeat state after state. We have given our entire youth and life to the Congress... I am confident that the top leadership of the party will take note of all the weaknesses and shortcomings that my colleagues and I have been talking about for a long time." At the same time, sources said that some leaders of Congress G-23 will meet at Ghulam Nabi Azad's house tomorrow to decide a further course of action.
