VHP Leader Kameshwar Chaupal Passes Away After Long Illness, PM Modi Condoles

AYODHYA/LUCKNOW: Kameshwar Chaupal, Senior BJP leader and Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust trustee in Ayodhya, passed away after a prolonged illness. He died at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, according to the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra’s media team. Chaupal had been battling a kidney disease for some time.

Chaupal, from Patna, became famous for laying the first brick at the Ram temple construction site during a ceremony in November 1989. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) said he was honored as the "first Kar Sevak" by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his sorrow, calling Chaupal a devoted follower of Lord Ram who made important contributions to the temple’s building. Modi praised Chaupal for his work with marginalized communities, remembering him for his devotion and service. "My condolences are with his family and supporters," the Prime Minister wrote on X.

“I'm deeply saddened by the demise of Sr. BJP leader & the Trust trustee of Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra , Kameshwar Chaupal Ji. He was a devoted follower of Lord Ram and made an immense contribution on the Ram Temple in Ayodhya's  construction. Coming from a Dalit background, KameshwarJi will always be in memory for his efforts towards the welfare of marginalized sections. In this moment of sorrow, my condolences are with his family and supporters. Om Shanti!”

Chaupal joined the BJP in 1991, although he did not win in two Lok Sabha elections. He remained influential in politics, serving in the Bihar Legislative Council until 2014 and representing Bihar in the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2014. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also mourned his loss, remembering him as a "great Ram devotee" who dedicated his life to religious and social work.

The VHP expressed deep sadness at his death, praying for peace for his soul and strength for his family during this tough time.

Kameshwar Chaupal made history when he was given the first brick for the foundation of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on November 9, 1989. His selection as a Dalit representative was a major move, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the temple movement. His contribution made him a well-distinguished figure in the Hindutva and socio-political field.
