New Delhi: On Monday, during a special session of Parliament discussing the 'Parliamentary Journey Of 75 Years,' Congress MLA Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury took the floor to highlight the achievements of past Prime Ministers, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi. However, what drew attention was when he mentioned the former Congress Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, and attributed the passing of the landmark legislation 'Right to Information Act' to her. Around 21 minutes and 55 seconds into his speech, Chowdhury said, "I am tempted to take the name of Madam Sonia Gandhi ji, who took the initiative to pass the landmark legislation 'Right to Information Act.'" He also credited Sonia Gandhi for other significant legislations such as the Right to Education Act, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), and the National Food Security Act. During his speech, Sonia Gandhi was seen prompting Chowdhury to discuss the Congress party's contributions in the field of Information Technology and their efforts to secure women's reservations in politics. When Speaker Om Birla signaled that Chowdhury's allotted time was up, Sonia Gandhi was heard instructing him to continue, saying, "Carry on, carry on, carry on..." This incident follows previous instances where Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury faced difficulties in addressing Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier questioned why the Congress party sidelined Chowdhury and suggested that there might have been external influences on this decision. Home Minister Amit Shah also commented on the Congress party's treatment of Chowdhury, highlighting that party members did not allow him to speak during certain proceedings.
