Vodafone Idea Partners with Ericsson for 4G and 5G Network Expansion

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has entered into a three-year agreement with Ericsson to acquire equipment for expanding its 4G network and launching 5G services. This collaboration aims to modernize Vi's existing infrastructure and ensure a smooth rollout of 5G technology, ultimately enhancing the customer experience and improving data traffic management.

As part of the contract, Ericsson will provide 4G and 5G base stations for Vi across ten markets, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, the Northeast, Assam, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh. This deal is part of a larger $3.6 billion network investment announced by Vodafone Idea, which includes partnerships with other telecom equipment manufacturers like Nokia and Samsung.

Ericsson's deployment will not only cover areas already served by its technology but also expand into new regions, significantly increasing the company's presence in India and strengthening its relationship with Vi.

The network upgrade will utilize Ericsson's energy-efficient, lightweight Radio System products, including mid-band Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios. These advancements are set to enhance Vi’s network performance, offering improved coverage, higher data speeds, and an overall better experience for customers.

“Collaborating with Ericsson will enable Vi to modernize its 4G network and rapidly deploy a world-class 5G network. This deployment will allow us to manage growing data traffic, deliver secure and reliable connectivity, and enhance the overall customer experience,” said Akshaya Moondra, CEO of Vi.

Jagbir Singh, CTO of Vi, emphasized the importance of energy-efficient 5G solutions, stating, “Ericsson’s 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) products will be deployed across our 4G and 5G networks, maximizing network performance for both consumers and enterprises in India.”

Ericsson's advanced technology is expected to play a crucial role in supporting India's digital transformation. “5G is a critical enabler of digital transformation and economic growth. We aim to empower Vi to deliver fast, reliable, and scalable 5G services,” said Andres Vicente, Head of Ericsson’s Market Area Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India.

Ericsson is recognized as a global leader in 5G technology and continues to invest significantly in research and development to assist telecom operators like Vi in delivering innovative services to their customers.
