Weekend Markets: Sensex Plunges 773 pts, Nifty below 17,400

Market Closing Updates: Indian benchmarks fell 1.3 percent on Weekend  Friday, in line with global peers, as a multi-decade high in US inflation rattled investor confidence amid fears of more rate hikes by the world's largest economy.

The 30-stock BSE Sensex fell 773 points, or 1.31 percent, to 58,153, while the broader NSE Nifty down 231 points, or 1.31 percent, to 17,375. Mid- and small-cap stocks ended the day in the red, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index down 2.02 percent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index down 2.37 percent.

The National Stock Exchange's 15 sector indices all ended the day in the red. The Nifty IT index underperformed the index by 2.72 percent.  Grasim Industries was the worst performer on the Nifty, falling 3.39 percent to Rs 1,708.60. Among the losers were Tech Mahindra, Infosys, UPL, and HCL Tech.

According Exchange data, foreign investors have sold a net $5.58 billion in Indian shares this year, compared to a net buy of $5.08 billion in the same period last year.
