Kolkata: Narayan Debnath, cartoonist and author of Bengali comic roles 'Bantul the Great,' 'Handa-Bhonda,' and 'Nonte Phonte,' passed away on Tuesday morning after a prolonged illness at a Kolkata hospital. Hospital sources reported this. Debnath was admitted to the hospital for treatment and was 97 years old. The hospital official said Padma Shri awardee Debnath breathed his last at around 10.15 am. He was admitted to a private hospital on December 24 and was on a life support system (ventilator). Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condoled his death. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled, saying, "It is a matter of great sorrow that Narayan Debnath, a noted litterateur, painter, cartoonist and creator of some immortal characters for the children's world, is no more. He made cartoons like Buntul the Great, Handa-Bhonda, Nonte-Phonte, which have been etched in our hearts for decades." Mamata Banerjee also wrote, "We were proud to honour him with Bengal's highest award Bangvibhushan in 2013. His death is certainly an irreparable loss to the world of literary creativity and comics. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, readers and countless fans and followers."
