What to Know About Nalanda University as PM Modi Inaugurates New Campus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going tom Inaugurate New Campus of Historic Nalanda University: Key Facts - Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to open the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar, today. The event will see the presence of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and ambassadors from 17 countries.

"It’s a very special day for our education sector. At around 10:30 AM today, the new campus of Nalanda University will be inaugurated at Rajgir. Nalanda has a strong connection with our glorious past. This university will surely cater to the educational needs of the youth," PM Modi shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Top 10 Things to Know About Nalanda University

Historical Significance: The new campus is located near the ancient ruins of Nalanda, a historic university established in the 5th century. The modern Nalanda University was founded by the Nalanda University Act of 2010, following a decision made at the second East Asia Summit in 2007.

Ancient Roots: Originally established in the fifth century, the ancient Nalanda University was a world-renowned center of learning that thrived for 800 years until it was destroyed in the 12th century by invaders.

Modern Beginnings: The contemporary university began operations in 2014 at a temporary site with 14 students. Construction of the new campus started in 2017.

International Collaboration: Seventeen countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, New Zealand, Portugal, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia, Laos, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, Myanmar, and Vietnam, have signed MoUs to support Nalanda University.

Scholarships and Schools: The university offers 137 scholarships to international students and includes six schools: School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religions, Historical Studies, Ecology and Environmental Studies, and Sustainable Development and Management.

Diverse Student Body: International students in postgraduate and PhD programs come from a wide range of countries, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Laos, Liberia, Myanmar, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, USA, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.

Campus Facilities: The campus includes two academic blocks with 40 classrooms that can seat approximately 1,900 students, two auditoriums with 300 seats each, and hostel accommodations for around 550 students.

Additional Amenities: The campus features an international center, an amphitheater with a capacity of 2,000, a faculty club, and a sports complex.

Eco-Friendly Design: The campus is designed as a 'Net Zero' Green Campus, featuring solar power installations, water treatment facilities, a water recycling plant, and 100 acres of water bodies, making it self-sustaining and environmentally friendly.

Global Partnership: Nalanda University represents a partnership between India and the East Asia Summit countries. The original university, founded 1,600 years ago, is considered one of the world's first residential universities and holds great historical significance.
