New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry today informed the winter session of Parliament that Jammu and Kashmir will be given statehood at the right time. This was stated by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai in response to a question by Congress MP Vivek Tankha. The Centre had in August 2019 abolished the special statehood of Jammu and Kashmir and declared it a Union Territory. Vivek Tankha asked the government whether any time frame has been fixed for granting statehood to union territories Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. In a written reply to this in the Lower House, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said, 'Jammu and Kashmir will be given statehood at the right time.' Tankha also asked if there was any time frame for holding elections in these two Union Territories. In response, Nityanand Rai said that the decision to hold elections there is the prerogative of the Election Commission of India. In October, speaking in Srinagar after a meeting to review the security situation in the Kashmir Valley, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the status of Jammu and Kashmir would be restored immediately after the delimitation process and subsequent elections.
