Why can't the TMC leader and his wife be interrogated in Kolkata? Supreme Court's question to ED

New Delhi: The top court has asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) why it cannot interrogate Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee in Kolkata instead of Delhi. On the question of the court, ED sought time to reply. The hearing will take place next Tuesday.

The court said that he can direct the West Bengal government to provide adequate security to the ED officials in Kolkata so that they do not face any problem in interrogation. In fact, the court has asked TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, who is facing investigation in the West Bengal coal scam case, to be ready to join the interrogation in Kolkata. In the coal smuggling case, the Supreme Court said that it will issue an order to provide security and uninterrupted interrogation to ED officers in Kolkata. The court also made it clear that at present, Abhishek Banerjee is a witness in this case and not a wanted accused.

At the same time, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the ED, said that many incidents of gherao and misbehavior of CBI officers have happened in Kolkata in the past. After this, the court said that it can also order Kolkata Police to provide all kinds of help regarding security in this matter. The court also said that it will also hold the West Bengal government accountable if there is a mistake or lapse in this matter.
