NATIONAL CARTOONIST DAY 2023: Every year, May 5 is observed as National Cartoonist Day. Cartoonist Day is marked in remembrance of the first comic strip featured in a newspaper. We also acknowledge the incredible work done by all cartoonists, past and present, and also their amazing creations on this day. Cartoons or caricatures have been an incredibly effective way to express it all, from making fun of political events and depicting the faults of society to congratulating people on their accomplishments. National Cartoonist Day History? What Makes May 5 National Cartoonist Day?: Readers of the Sunday Morning newspaper in New York were in for a little surprise. A big-eared, barefoot child with a wicked grin appeared in a single-strip, full-color drawing that appeared in the New York World on May 5, 1895. The comic strip, first known as "Hogan's Alley," was created by American cartoonist Richard Outcault and eventually changed its name to "The Yellow Kid." This became the very first cartoon to be a commercial hit and was used in commercials for postcards, billboards, cigarette packs, and other products. By the time The Yellow Kid series came to an end in 1898, cartoons were a common newspaper staple. As a result, as time went on, so did the demand for skilled cartoonists and illustrators. The national cartoonist society was founded when?: During the Second World War, a group of cartoonists, including Gus Edson, Otto Soglow, Clarence D. Russell, Bob Dunn, and others, used to host brief cartoon shows in hospitals to amuse the soldiers. As a result of the enthusiastic reception, the group expanded and gave performances in hospitals and different military sites. Clarence D. Russell recommended the group start a club to maintain things the same even after World War II ended when they were watching the programme at one of the military bases. In 1946, the National Cartoonists Society (N.C.S.) was established in this manner.
