Will revisit EWS criteria: Govt tells SC

New Delhi: The Central Government plans to examine the Rs 8 lakh annual income ceiling for reservation in government employment and educational institutions for the economically weaker sections (EWS). The government has petitioned the Supreme Court to have the EWS quota restriction reconsidered. For the same, the Centre has asked the court for four weeks.

On Thursday, government solicitor general (SG) Tushar Mehta told a bench led by DY Chandrachud at the Supreme Court of India of this. He informed the court that the administration will form a committee to re-examine the yearly income norms. "I have a direction to state that the government has chosen to review the EWS criteria," Mehta, who represents the government in the Supreme Court, told a bench consisting of Justices Suryakant and Vikram Nath. Within four weeks, we'll assemble a committee and make a decision. We will reconsider the reservation norms for the economically weaker sections. '

Several presentations about the methodology used by the Centre to set income requirements for equal lying EWS throughout the country have been made in the Supreme Court in the previous two months. From the current academic session 2021-22, the court considered many petitions contesting 10% reservation of EWS seats within all India quota seats in medical admission.
