Winter storm Kenan causes heavy snow and high wind gusts in New York

New York City and the surrounding areas are being pummeled by winter storm Kenan, which is bringing heavy snow and strong winds. According to media reports, New York City is expected to receive 8 to 12 inches of total snowfall from Friday evening through early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service's projection.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated during a press conference near noon on Saturday that Suffolk and Nassau counties were the most affected, with 7 to 11 inches of snowfall as of Saturday morning and another 5 to 12 inches expected. According to Hochul, New York City has received 4 inches of snow so far, with another 4-7 inches predicted by 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Hochul had previously proclaimed a state of emergency, which went into force on Friday evening, due to expected heavy precipitation downstate. According to a tweet from the National Weather Service at 9 a.m. on Saturday, snowfall at John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Central Park all topped 5 inches in the past 12 hours.

According to travel monitoring platform flightaware.com, 460 flights from John F. Kennedy International Airport were cancelled, accounting for 80 percent of the total. Meanwhile, 90% of flights from Newark Liberty International Airport and 97% of flights from LaGuardia Airport were cancelled, resulting in 322 and 279 cancellations, respectively. In a similar way, flights to the three airports were cancelled.
