World Tuberculosis Day: Covid crisis put India's 'End TB' progress at risk

New Delhi: Though the government is committed to making India tuberculosis-free by 2025, public health experts said on World Tuberculosis Day, March 24, that the government's 'END TB' programme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2017, appears indecisive five years ahead of the global target of 2030.

Covid-19 has played a major role in derailing efforts to reduce the infectious disease in India and around the world, reversing previous gains. It's because healthcare resources were redirected to battle the increased number of Covid cases, which hampered diagnosis, notification, and treatment, as well as post-treatment nutrition, contributing to relapse cases.

According to a research released in May 2020 by the 'Stop TB Partnership,' the Covid pandemic might result in an additional 6.3 million TB cases globally between 2020 and 2025.

According to a health ministry research released in March of last year, Covid reduced TB detection in India by 25% by 2020. Both the public and private sectors experienced declines. While there has been some rebound since then, it has not yet reached the levels seen in 2019.
