Reason to celebrate World Wildlife Day

World Wildlife Day is being observed on 3 March i.e., World Wildlife Day aims to raise awareness towards the conservation of wildlife on a global scale. The United Nations General Assembly, in its 68th session, announced 3 March every year as World Wildlife Day on 20 December 2013. The United Nations General Assembly requested the CITES Secretariat to look into the arrangements related to this day. At the same time, in the conference on International Business on endangered species of wildlife and flora, it was proposed to celebrate the 16th meeting of the Conference and Parties i.e. December 2013 in Thailand on March 3 as World Wildlife Day.

This day is celebrated as World Wildlife Day to commemorate the acceptance of this proposal of CITES. The CITES conference was held on 14 March 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand. On this day in India, forests and wildlife were included in the concurrent list of the Indian Constitution. The Union Ministry under the Government of India also issued guidelines regarding policies and planning related to wildlife conservation.

World Wildlife Day 2021 focuses on underwater life, which focuses on marine species, and is an opportunity to highlight important issues and values of marine wildlife for our everyday lives. The occasion will also celebrate successful initiatives for conservation and continued management of these species and to increase support for future initiatives.
