Leh (Ladakh): The world's first high-altitude para sports centre will soon open in Leh, Ladakh, to train para-athletes for international competitions. This pioneering center aims to prepare Indian and international para-athletes for the 2028 Paralympics, enhancing their skills and confidence to succeed on global stages. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, has partnered with the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF) to establish this center, focusing on providing top-tier training for para-athletes. High-altitude training offers unique benefits, helping athletes build resilience and endurance, and this center will give Indian para-athletes a chance to train alongside global champions. Chief Executive Councillor Tashi Gyalson expressed pride in Leh’s role in setting up the world’s first high-altitude para sports center, noting the success of Indian para-athletes, who won 29 medals, including seven gold, in the 2024 Paralympics. Gyalson highlighted that the center will help tap into the region’s potential and support India’s aim to rank among the top 10 countries in future Paralympic events. "This facility will allow athletes to train with world-class amenities and proudly represent Ladakh internationally," he said. While the center is under construction, the AMF will begin identifying children with special needs in Leh-Ladakh, screening them for training at AMF’s Infinity Parasports Academy and Rehabilitation Centre in Hyderabad. This interim phase will focus on building essential skills and providing rehabilitation. Fifteen potential candidates from Ladakh will soon undergo training in Hyderabad, with screenings held at local levels for broader participation. This project underscores LAHDC's dedication to providing opportunities for para-athletes across India, with AMF as a committed partner. Aditya Mehta, founder of AMF, expressed excitement about the new initiative, stating, "Leh’s high-altitude environment is ideal for building strength and endurance. Together with the Ladakh government, we aim to position India as a leading nation in the 2028 Paralympics." The CEC also announced a dedicated committee to oversee the center’s development, directing officials to identify suitable land for the facility.
