Wrestling: Deepak Punia's brilliant performance helped India become world champion

NEW DELHI: India's Deepak Poonia defeats Russia's Elik Shebzukov in the Junior World Championships in Wrestling. India has become the world champion for the first time in 18 years. In the men's freestyle category, the score in 86 kg was equal to 2-2, but Poonia was declared victorious as the final score scored. Deepak won the silver medal in the tournament last year.

Earlier in 2001, Ramesh Kumar (69 kg) and Palwinder Singh Chima (130 kg) won gold medals at the Junior World Championships.

In the 92 kg category, Vicky won the bronze medal by defeating Mongolia's Batmagaini Ankhtuvshin 4-3. Deepak was congratulated by Asian Gold Medallist Bajrang Punia on his success in a tweet. "Congratulations to Deepak and Vicky on winning the gold and bronze medals," he wrote. Best wishes for the future. The 19-year-old Deepak has also made it to the Indian team for the Senior World Wrestling Championships to be held in Kazakhstan.

He will represent India in the 86 kg weight category in the tournament which will be held from September 14 to 11. The world championships will also be part of the Tokyo Olympic-2020. Deepak won gold at the Cadet Championships in 2016.  Although he did not win a medal at the Junior World Championships in 2017, he won silver in Slovakia in 2018. Deepak became India's first world champion in 18 years.
