Yemen's Houthi militia ready for peace talks with Saudi-led coalition

SANAA: Yemen's Houthi militia said they are willing to talk to the Saudi-led coalition about ending the country's seven-year civil conflict.

According to a broadcast from the militia-run al-Masirah TV, the Houthis claimed they "welcome discussion with the coalition countries in any neutral country" that did not join the conflict in Yemen. The Houthi militia did not provide any other information.

Since 2014, when the Houthi militia forcefully overran much of the country and took all northern provinces, including Sanaa, Yemen has been engulfed in civil conflict. After the Houthis forced President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi into exile, Saudi Arabia led an Arab military coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015 to protect his administration. Yemen is one of the world's largest humanitarian catastrophes to date as a result of the conflict.

Meanwhile, the UN humanitarian director has urged a world focused on Russia's attack on Ukraine to remember the situation in Yemen, where "one of the world's gravest global humanitarian crises" has left 19 million people hungry this year, with 160,000 facing "famine-like conditions."
