Lionel Messi said this on Germany’s surprising early elimination from the World Cup

Lionel Messi has reacted to the shock elimination of 2014 winners Germany from the group stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The PSG superstar was on the receiving end of humiliation at the hands of the Germans back in 2014 when they downed him and his Argentina in the final.

However, ever since that triumph, Germany haven’t been the same on the global stage. For the first time in their history, they failed to reach the knockouts in successive FIFA World Cup tournaments, after a group stage exit shocked them in the previous edition as well.

Former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick was leading Germany into his debut World Cup tournament as their coach, having assisted Joachim Lowe during the 2014 triumph.

There have been a number of upsets at this tournament, with even Lionel Messi and co being hit with a defeat by Saudi Arabia in their opening game, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal falling to South Korea, Belgium stunned by Morocco, and Brazil and France embarrassed by outgoing Cameroon and Tunisia respectively.

However, Germany’s loss to Japan in their Group E opening game, followed by their elimination despite drawing 1-1 with Spain and winning 4-2 against Costa Rica is arguably the biggest upset, given their absence from the knockouts in two World Cup tournaments in a row.

On the other hand, Messi, who managed to bounce back with his Argentina team after their defeat at the hands of Saudi, is slowly having a tournament to remember.

Messi scored another in Argentina’s Round of 16 win over Australia, which was also his 1000th professional game, as they now face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
