Why did Messi want to leave Barcelona?

Messi sent the club "a paper stating his wish to leave" on August 25, 2020, according to Barcelona, who said this followed Messi's growing unhappiness with the direction of the team both on and off the field.

Messi's alleged early termination option, which would have allowed him to leave the club for free, could only be exercised if he had informed the club of his decision, according to reports.
