‘Triple Talaq bill bats for women's right’ says Union Minister for Law Ravi Shankar Prasad

New Delhi [India], December 29 (NT): Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad has averred that triple talaq bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabah amid the hue and cry of all position parties on Thursday, was all about women's right and equality.

The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriages) Bill 2017 making instant triple talaq against the law with up to three years imprison for the offender.

Prasad said that as introducing the bill in Loksabha that it was a historic day. This matter is not related to any prayer, ritual, belief, politics or religion. It is only about women's right, dignity, and equality. This practice was still prevailing in the nation despite Supreme Court's order terming it against the law.

He asserted “I came to know that 303 cases of triple talaq have been surfaced as of now in 2017”. This law was needed as our Muslim sisters and daughters were being thrown out. It is the beginning of new changes.

He further said that the Narendra Modi -led -government is standing with the sufferer women of triple talaq as appealing to all the political parties to support it and not politicize the bill.

The ‘Triple Talaq bill’ will now be sent to the Rajya Sabha for passage before it is presented to the President for signing it into law. (NT)
