ive-time world champion, Mary Kom received an honorary doctorate degree yesterday conferred upon her by the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) for her excellent contributions in the field of sports.

In a statement given during her commemoration, she expressed her dissatisfaction upon India just getting 2 medals. As a dedicated pugilist and an altruist who coaches underprivileged children boxing, she stated that one of the major reasons behind the failure was "lack of awareness" in the country.

She also expressed her disappointment on her not being selected for the Rio Olympics by saying, “I only got two chances to qualify. Male boxers get five to six chances, but even then many of them did not qualify,”

In her acceptance speech, the Rajya Sabha MP said that she would “cherish” the degree forever and urged students to enjoy doing what they do and only then they would overcome the difficulties while following their dreams.

85-year-old Rose Milian Bathew, the first woman chairperson of the UPSC, was also conferred with the degree during the university’s 23rd convocation.
