Guwahati:  Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday claimed in the state assembly that Muslims have become the largest community in his state and they should start behaving like a majority group. He also put the responsibility of ensuring communal harmony on the Muslim community, especially the people of Bengali speaking origin.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma further said that even the "indigenous Muslims" of the BJP-ruled state are in fear of losing their identity. He claimed to have evidence in support of his claim. Responding to the debate on the motion of thanks of the Governor, Sarma said that 'minorities (Muslims) have now become the majority'. They constitute 30-35 percent of the state's population. With a population of around one crore, they are the largest community and it is their responsibility to ensure communal harmony. According to the 2011 census, Hindus constitute 61.47 percent of the total population of 3.12 crore in Assam. Muslims constitute 34.22 percent of the population and they form the majority in many districts. While Christians constitute 3.74 per cent of the total population in the state, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains constitute less than one per cent.

CM Sarma further said that the Muslims should understand that the progress of the state is directly related to their activities, along with this, the CM urged the Muslims to reduce the problems faced by the state in the direction of poverty alleviation, population control etc. urged to work. He said he should stop thinking of himself as an "outsider" and focus on communal unity and harmony.
