Mumbai: At least 13 people died in heavy rains, floods and lightning in the Marathwada area of Maharashtra, while National Disaster Response Force teams rescued more than 560 people. NDRF officials said more than 200 animals have washed away and several houses were damaged due to rain on Sunday and Monday.

Heavy rain lashed parts of the same area and Mumbai on Tuesday as well. The MET department forecast that the Marathwada, Mumbai and the coastal Konkan region of the state are likely to receive "extremely heavy rainfall" in the next 24 hours. Marathwada is an area of Central Maharashtra where rain has wreaked havoc. Eight districts of Aurangabad, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Nanded, Beed, Jalna and Hingoli have been confounded.

Officials said, one person died and three others went missing when a state transport bus was washed away while crossing a flooded bridge in Yavatmal district on Tuesday morning. The officer said the incident took place around 8 am on Dahgaon bridge in Umarkhed tehsil. The semi-luxury bus of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) was on its way from Nagpur to Nanded at the time of the incident. After the water level rose due to heavy rains in the areas adjoining the Manjara dam, the authorities on Tuesday opened all the 18 gates of the dam to drain water, causing floods in some villages in Beed district while warning has been issued in neighbouring cities.
