Madurai: No matter how innovative investors or the common man gets, thieves always find a way to extract their undue share as loot. In a recent reported incident, A pan-shop owner in Madurai experienced this thumb rule recently when thieves made away with 1400 gold sovereigns of gold that he had carefully stashed away in the pan shop.
According to report, the weight of a gold sovereign is 7.98 g, and pure gold content of 7.32240 gm. Experts say that all sovereigns have a fineness of 916.7, making them 22 carats. 1 kg of a gold bar of 995 would need around 136 coins. The 140 gold coins stolen from the Madurai shop should be close to this value too.

However,It is to be noted that Kattabomman street resident Gopinath runs a pan shop in Narimedu Maruthu Pandiyar Nagar. He has been running this shop for nearly 30 years now. He had shut his shop securely on Monday night but when his son returned the next morning to open the shop, he noticed that the place had been ransacked and that the gold had gone missing.
While the father-son duo then registered a complaint at the Tallakulam police station. Police rushed to the shop and carried out the preliminary investigations. The thieves had apparently broken the safety locker by using a welding machine. Gopinath stated that gold worth 1400 sovereign that had been deposited with him by several people had been kept inside the locker and had now been found missing. The police have verified the documents submitted by the people who had deposited the gold jewellery and found that 1400 sovereign gold had indeed been stolen.

Notably, the thieves had apparently smashed the CCTV cameras inside the shop before looting it and also wore masks. This has made the identification an almost impossible task. The theft inside a shop that is on a busy street has shocked many.
