Guwahati: Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that more than 1500 youths of Assam have joined various terrorist organizations since 2016. In a written reply to a question in the Assam Assembly, Chief Minister Himanta informed that a total of 1561 youths from the state have joined five terror outfits since 2016. Whereas, 8,000 terrorists have surrendered.
In response to a question by Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia in the Assam Assembly on Tuesday, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that from 2016 to 2022, 811 youth joined NDFB, while 164 youth joined NLFB (Bodo), 351 youth joined PCTS, 203 youth joined ULFA and 32 youth joined UPRF during this period. The Chief Minister has further informed that "During this period, 7,935 terrorists belonging to 23 different militant outfits surrendered and joined the mainstream. Out of 4,516 cadres of NDFB, 465 cadres of NLFB, 915 cadres of KPLT, 388 cadres of PDCK, 378 cadres of UPLA and 246 cadres of KLNLF. 181 cadres of DNLA, 178 cadres of ADF, 169 cadres of UGPO, 105 cadres of ULFA, 87 cadres of NSLA, 77 cadres of TLA, and 60 cadres of KLF have surrendered.
Sarma also said that since 2016, when the BJP came to power, a total of 84 people have been arrested for jihadi activities in the state. The arrested jihadis were involved in Islamist terror outfits like Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Hizbul Mujahideen and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).
