Islamabad: A tragic accident has taken place in Pakistan's mountainous Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. All the 17 people present in the Indus river have been killed when a van full of passengers fell. The van was on its way from Chilas to Rawalpindi when it fell into the Indus river in Paniba area of Kohistan district, Dawn News reported.

A family had booked the van privately on rent for the trip. The report on the incident said that officials of the Dasu-Kohistan Control Room said that apart from one driver, 16 passengers from the same family, including women and children, were present in the van. The accident took place when the driver lost control of the van at a turn.

Police said the van then fell into the Indus river and started drowning. Relief and rescue teams rushed to the spot as soon as they came to know about the accident. They were trying to trace the missing passengers but faced hurdles due to difficult terrain and depth of the river. Professional divers along with local volunteers have been pressed into service to carry out the rescue operation.
