New Delhi, Police suspected that a 16-year-old girl whose body was found at an East Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar area residence on July 28 was sexually assaulted and then murdered.

The accused had also tried to burn her body after pouring turpentine oil on it, said sources.

Two suspects believed to have harassed and stalked the teenager for months have been caught.

The victim’s body was found by her mother on Friday with severe burns.

But, an autopsy, confirmed that the girl was sexually assaulted before being murdered.

According to sources, "teenager was alone at her home when the incident took place. Her parents and brother were not home at the time. The two youths allegedly came to her house and murdered her after sexually assaulting her. They also allegedly tried to burn her body."

A friend of the girl has told the police that she had been followed by two young men in the neighbourhood for long and has also claimed that she was sexually assaulted by them.

The suspects were picked up on the basis of her statement.
