Local officials in Tripoli revealed that a group of 165 illegal migrants were voluntarily deported from Libya to their home nation of Niger.

"A flight took off from Misurata City to Niger for the voluntary return of 165 illegal migrants, including women and children, after the head of the Illegal Migration Control Department approved it," Hussain al-Turki, head of the Misurata International Airport's Illegal Migrants' Deportation Department, told the media.

According to al-Turki, the deportation was conducted in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The International Organization for Migration's Voluntary Humanitarian Repatriation programme organizes the return of illegal immigrants stuck in Libya to their home countries.

Illegal immigrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach European shores have frequently used Libya as a point of departure. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 32,425 illegal migrants were rescued and returned to Libya in 2021, while 662 perished and 891 others went missing off the Libyan coast on the Central Mediterranean route.
