Lucknow [Uttar Pradesh], January 13 (NT): In the line of Potatoes -protest the  UP police have detained two persons for throwing potatoes outside Uttar Pradesh state Assembly.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Deepak Kumar from Lucknow has said, inquiry shows that the potatoes were not thrown by farmers, but by people with political intention.

The police have claimed that the arrested persons had contested elections for Samajwadi Party in Nagar Panchayat elections and send away the role of Kisan Unions in it.

After their appeal to obtain a fair price for potatoes went unnoticeable by the Uttar Pradesh government, the farmers had last week dumped their produce crops of potatoes outside the state assembly building to stage protest.

With the price deafening to Rs 4 per kg, the farmers are demanding a minimum of Rs 10 per kg to Yogi-led- UP Govt.

It is noted that, after coming to power in the state, the Yogi Adityanath administration had made a decision to fix a minimum support price for potato at Rs 487 per quintal in a bid to support the potato growers. (NT)
