Bangalore: The hijab controversy that started from a school in Karnataka's Udupi district has slowly spread across Karnataka. On Thursday (February 3, 2022) morning, more than 20 Muslim girl students wearing hijab tried to enter the college at Bhandarkar College in Kundapur, Udupi district of Karnataka, but were stopped. It is being told that more than 20 Muslim girl students wearing burqa or hijab in the college were stopped by the principal of 'Bhandarkars College' at the entrance.

The principal told them that as per the orders of the government and the guidelines of the college, they would have to come to the classes in uniform. On this, the girl students argued that they have been coming to college wearing hijab for a long time, and they should be allowed. But the principal denied him admission in the college. The meeting of BJP MLA Haladi Srinivas Shetty with the parents of Muslim girl students on this issue also remained inconclusive. Shetty has now sought the intervention of state education minister BC Nagesh in the issue. The Education Minister has clearly told the college authorities that girl students can come to school and college only in uniform. Neither she can come wearing hijab nor saffron shawl will be allowed.

Earlier, protesting against girls coming to a college in Chikkamagaluru wearing hijab, college students wearing saffron colored shawls reached the college. On Tuesday, many students also staged a sit-in demonstration regarding this. After this the police entered the college premises and brought the situation under control. Amidst the protests, the college principal MG Umashankar had persuaded the students to withdraw the agitation.
